This week I wanted to share with you a cracker of a book I’ve recently finished. Take some terrific characterizations, threw in some vivid descriptions of Brisbane in the 80’s, and a story line that reads like a true crime biography and you have Boy Swallows Universe. The heart of the boy is felt throughout this story providing an insight into how strong a boy’s love for his mum can be. But it’s not a love story although there are moments of friendship that show true heart. But mostly what I loved about this book was the flow of the story, you were there with the boy all the way and felt his pain and his hopeful planning like it was your own. You wanted him to pick himself up after being bullied at school and make things better for himself. You believed in his ability to find a better life. I also loved the characters that offered support and friendship along the way, whilst hating the badies and some you just were not too sure about. It was a real ride through criminal times of 80’s Brisbane.
