The favourite part of your work day. May 26, 2017 – Posted in: Blog

We spend over a third of our lives at work, okay maybe not quiet that much when you think about weekends but it is a big part of our week. Our work provides so many ways for us to grow and learn but it is also probably the place we are most comfortable outside our home.

Some people are lucky to find jobs they love by chasing what there passionate about. You might be lucky to have landed a job in an orchestra after spending years practising you’re Flute. Or maybe you are teaching children as you feel great about watching others grow and learn. But some people just need to find something that they love about their job. Maybe you are not fully content with your job but hopefully there is something that you really enjoy about it. If you’re working in a call centre you probably love talking to people but may not like the pressure of answers a certain number of calls each day. You may work as a gardener and love preparing the gardens but weeding is a drag. So I’ve been thinking about what I love most about my day and to be honest I have found it hard to choose between customers interactions, choosing new books or meeting the authors, my three favourite activities. Lucky for me I get to do the first two a lot in my everyday but the third one, meeting the authors is a special and treasured part of my job as it’s so infrequent.

There are over 10,000 books in the bookshop and that means close to 10,000 different authors and they are all so unique. What I love about authors is that they each have a story and are very passionate people. I can honestly say that the authors I have met are the most varied group of people that I have come across. This is probably because they have all given up another profession to be a writer, except for the lucky few who embraced writing as a career straight out of school. Meeting them, I get to hear some amazing stories about different walks of life. Just hearing about how they researched their novel is fascinating as it usually involves a tall or two in gaining the information contained in the story.

So with all this in mind, meeting authors are really a wonderful part of my day. I get to meet these most interesting characters and am always intrigued by where they come from and what they love most as these are a big part of what they write.

This year I have been lucky enough to have several authors come into Books of Buderim on The Sunshine Coast. But I’d love to meet more.
